Due to the limited amount of controller slots on the PS2, Sonic R's multiplayer mode will be reduced to two players from the possible four on the PC version. The GCN version will preserve the four player capability from the PC version. As well, the collection contains the six Game Gear games that were not in Sonic Mega Collection Plus, which are:

Sonic Drift 2 will keep its multiplayer mode. Also, there are a few hidden games: all three Streets of Rage titles, both Vectorman titles and Bonanza Brothers. In addition, five-minute demos of the games from Sonic Mega Collection playing the last level can be unlocked. The American version of Gems Collection will not have the Streets of Rage trilogy or Bonanza Brothers. The compilation is a Nintendo Gamecube exclusive in the United States, but will be also released on Sony PlayStation 2 in Europe and Japan. It is currently selling for $29.99 in the United States.

The US version of the game has the US soundtrack for Sonic CD, whilst the European and Japanese versions have the Japanese/UK soundtracks. However, the US version of the game still has the Japanese soundtrack on the disc, and is currently being hacked so that you can listen to either soundtrack.
