"Metal Mayhem" is the fifth episode of the Sonic Mania Adventures web series, first airing on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel on July 17, 2018, the same day that Sonic Mania Plus was released in the US and Europe. This served as the final episode until the release of a holiday special in December.

Synopsis

The decisive battle looms. With the fate of the Chaos Emeralds at stake, it’s up to Sonic, Tails, Mighty, and Ray to unite against a superpowered Metal Sonic. It's time for Part 5 of Sonic Mania Adventures: Metal Mayhem!^[1]

Episode summary

Metal Sonic ambushes Sonic and Tails.

The blue and yellow duo make it into the main room of Dr. Eggman's Angel Island base, only to find no threat whatsoever, confusing the blue hedgehog. Metal Sonic falls into place and traps both of the heroes. Unable to move, Metal Sonic swipes their gems for the doctor. He then speeds off while Sonic and Tails recover from the machines smashing their faces onto the floor. Eggman rises up on a moving pedestal and gives Metal Sonic the rest of the Chaos Emeralds, allowing the robot double to power up in a Super form-like state. This excites Sonic, making him stoke for a real challenge, which disappoints Tails. Sonic charges up a Super Peel Out before Metal Sonic pushes him across the room.

The two struggle on a wall, with Sonic sweating having to now keep up against his Metal counterpart's new super strength. Ray and Mighty arrive on the scene in time to help out in the fight with the superpowered Metal Sonic. Mighty's punch manages to free Sonic from Metal's grip on him. Eggman, angry to see resistance, commands Metal Sonic to fight on against the four of them. They all charge at each other into battle. Sonic spin dashes, Ray attacks from above, Tails kicks his face, and Mighty gives him a right uppercut, but Metal Sonic knocks all of them away. All four of them grow tired while Metal Sonic keeps up.

Tails then realizes he can use his gadget they got from Eggman earlier. Sonic understands clearly and starts distracting the shiny metallic look-alike. Before the robot could make a move, he is caught under the same trap Sonic and Tails were in earlier. The seven Emeralds leave Metal Sonic and start flying away from Angel Island. Sonic gives the faker one last spin dash and starts celebrating a little too early. The Master Emerald appears from underneath Metal Sonic and the robot starts powering up with it like a certain other copy of Sonic. Before Metal Sonic can do anything, Knuckles runs in and knocks both Metal Sonic and Eggman out of the base with one single punch. In victory, Knuckles walks off with the Master Emerald back in his arms as the other four watch in confusion. They then celebrate defeating Eggman with good old chili dogs by the Tornado.

-Sonic and Tails arrive at [[Dr. Eggman]]'s base of operations on [[Angel Island]]. Upon entering the strange base however, they find no threat in question, which makes Sonic displeased. Suddenly however, Sonic and Tails get ambushed by Metal Sonic, who drops down from above and encages both heroes in force-fields emitting from the floor. Completely frozen, Sonic can only watch as Metal Sonic violently lowers the force-fields again and swiftly takes both his and Tails' Chaos Emeralds for himself. As Sonic and Tails recover, a laughing Eggman reveals himself with the rest of the Chaos Emeralds in hand. A disgruntled Sonic then looks on as Metal Sonic uses Eggman's remaining Emeralds and his own to empower himself to [[Super transformation|Super State]] levels, granting him yellow eyes and a golden aura.

In the meantime, the four heroes get acquainted with each other and team-up to face the evil robot.

Tails then manages to strip the Chaos Emeralds from Metal Sonic by lowering the force-field again, causing the Chaos Emerald to be ejected from the base. Sonic then proceeds to hit Metal Sonic away with a [[Spin Dash]], and the heroes celebrate in the belief that they have won. However, the four heroes soon find Metal Sonic attempting to power up again using the power of the [[Master Emerald]] while Eggman watches on with a maniacal laugh. Before the empowered Metal Sonic can attack however, he is swiftly punched out of the facility with Eggman by [[Knuckles the Echidna|Knuckles]]. The echidna then calmly takes the Master Emerald and leaves the base as the others look on.
