Knuckles the Echidna, formerly titled Knuckles: The Dark Legion, is a series of comic books, produced by Archie Comics from 1997 to 1999, starring Knuckles the Echidna. It is a spin-off of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series.
History
As with the video games, Knuckles had become a popular character in the Archie comics Sonic lore since his introduction in issue #13, and had already received a three part Sonic's Friendly Nemesis Knuckles mini-series starting in the July of 1996. This new series was originally set to be another three-part limited series called Knuckles: The Dark Legion, but Archie decided to continue the publication for another 29 issues, running side-by-side the stories seen in the Sonic the Hedgehog comics.
Knuckles the Echidna usually opted for three-part stories focusing Knuckles' past and echidna culture on Angel Island (which was originally called the Floating Island at the time), frequently featuring the Chaotix as well as Archie creations Julie-Su, Echidnapolis and its citizens, and the Dark Legion. Many of the characters and concepts were created by the spin-off's head writer Ken Penders, and so were effectively retconned from the overall Archie continuity in 2012, following a legal dispute between the writer and his former employers.
Following the release of issue #32, the spin-off series was dropped due to disappointing sales of later issues. However Knuckles and the other Angel Island characters continued to make frequent appearances in the ongoing main Sonic the Hedgehog series, doing so until 2017, when Sega ultimately discontinued their partnership with Archie Comics. Knuckles-centric stories would also begin appearing again in the Sonic Universe series starting in 2009.
