Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme is a prototype of an unreleased Sonic game for the Xbox. The prototype was found on an XDK development Xbox unit. This unit also had complete or partial versions of several non-Sonic-related prototypes. Information and videos on this game were released by its discoverer, ProtonX, on the 20th of April 2011. Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme is a hoverboarding game, and may have been an early pitch demo which led to the development of Sonic Riders.
Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme was developed by Visionscape Interactive as a game pitch to SEGA. A similar game was eventually produced called Tech Deck: Bare Knuckle Grind. This game was also located on the same XDK development Xbox unit purchased by ProtonX, but, unlike Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme, Tech Deck: Bare Knuckle Grind saw an eventual release on Xbox and PC in 2005. Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme and the early build of Tech Deck: Bare Knuckle Grind are virtually the same game, seemingly featuring the same exact engines and similar level layouts.
The major differences between these two in-development games include an alternate Eminem/rap soundtrack, the main character models replaced with Tech Deck "Thumbs," and certain textures, such as those used for the breakable boxes, being replaced. The retrievable items within Tech Deck: Bare Knuckle Grind are primarily reflections of skateboard culture such as skateboard wheels and dollar signs, replacing the rings and chaos emeralds in Sonic the Hedgehog Extreme. The sound effects were also adjusted to be much more suitable for a Tech Deck game.
Both Sonic and Shadow are playable. The player must navigate the level while riding a hoverboard. It is possible to rotate the character while airborne, but landing incorrectly can result in the player falling off the board. It's possible to balance on the side of platforms, but when doing so a balance meter will appear and the player must keep from tipping. Rails can be found throughout the level. Turbo boost panels can be used to increase your speed temporarily.
When starting a game three gameplay modes appear: Mission, Combat, and Race. During the Mission portion the objective seems to be to find a key in each level to unlock the exit. The Combat mode is one or two players. In Combat mode collectable items can be found which may be used in battle against the opponent or to destroy crates. The items include grenades, firecrackers, homing rockets, and mines. The Combat mode area is small and has 4 sub-zones. The Race mode involves the player going along a seemingly endless track. It has been compared to the first level of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
