Speed Sphere Challenge is a browser game developed in collaboration with Lego to tie-in with the release of the Lego Sonic the Hedgehog toy line. The game can be accessed via the official Lego website or on its own individual website.[1][2]

Gameplay

In Speed Sphere Challenge, the player guides Lego Sonic through an isometric level in the Speed Sphere to defeat Dr. Eggman and save the animals, breaking Badniks and collecting rings along the way. After reading a tutorial, the player starts the game by launching Sonic from the Speed Sphere launcher, and must use the arrow keys to change Sonic's direction as he rolls automatically and bounces off walls. Pressing  space  will cause Sonic to perform a boost. When Sonic boosts, he is able to break through obstacles, although they must wait for a cooldown to end before they can use it again.

Sonic can defeat Badniks to rescue animals by rolling into them, but hitting their projectiles will damage Sonic. Spikes also appear in this game, occasionally appearing from yellow tiles. If Sonic takes damage, he'll lose some of his rings. Although, Sonic cannot die even if he gets hit without any rings and will only lose speed.

Dr. Eggman is present at the end of the level in his Death Egg Robot from the "Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot" set. Sonic must boost into the Death Egg Robot to drain Dr. Eggman's health; touching it normally will hurt Sonic. Additionally, rings and capsules are located around the area. Once Dr. Eggman's health is depleted, the animals are set free and the game is won.

Trivia

  • Infamously, the game reuses music from the then-upcoming Sonic Superstars before the songs could be officially revealed. These include the title theme (plays after defeating Dr. Eggman), the Bridge Island Zone theme (plays during the game) and an unknown theme (plays on the title screen).
