Overview
In most of its appearances, the Light Attack sees its user automatically carry out a chain of arcing Homing Attacks to destroy all enemies in the vicinity, whether they are in a chain or above the user. After destroying one target, the user will automatically move to the nearest enemy in the chain until there are none left to destroy. Given it is faster and more powerful than regular Homing Attacks, the Light Attack can be useful when facing an overwhelming number of enemies if the user can charge it quickly enough.
Game appearances
Sonic Adventure
In Sonic Adventure, the Light Speed Attack is unlocked by picking up the Ancient Light upgrade from the Mystic Ruins. It requires charging up in the same way as a Light Dash - a process which can be expedited by the Crystal Ring - by holding to store up energy, and then just release near an enemy. Upon acquiring the move, Sonic must use it to destroy the Kiki guarding the entrance to Red Mountain. When fighting Chaos 6, Sonic can use the Light Speed Attack after freezing Chaos 6 to deal double damage.
Knuckles has a similar move in Sonic Adventure - the Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack.
Sonic Shuffle
The Light Speed Attack is named the Light Speed Spin Attack and is Sonic's special attack ability in Sonic Shuffle. Activated by drawing a Special Card in battle, the player spins a roulette, and can deal any amount of damage between 1 and 7 (S).
Sonic Adventure 2
The move returns under the name of the Light Attack in Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic can find the Ancient Light necessary to use the move in Green Forest, however Shadow can also use the move by finding the Ancient Light in Sky Rail. This would be his first and only use of the ability.
While the Light Dash has its own dedicated method of use, the Light Attack is performed in the same way as in Sonic Adventure in that the user must charge the move by holding , then release near a group of enemies when fully charged.
Sonic Heroes
In Sonic Heroes, the move is one of the after-effects of using Team Sonic's Team Blast move, Sonic Overdrive. Pressing (GC)/ (PS2)/ (Xbox) during Sonic Overdrive's cooldown will make Sonic spiral into any nearby enemies. In addition, the move is automatically granted when Team Sonic is in their Super forms when fighting Metal Overlord. At the cost of five Rings, Super Sonic may use it at any time an attackable object is in range by pressing the attack button while jumping.
