Item Box

From Sonic Retro

Is this worth mentioning? Espyo 22:00, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Check the page again. I believe I have answered your question. --RGamer2009 22:25, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Sweet. Now that that's done, I added a gallery with the different types of monitors. Now if only someone could post a screenshot of a Sonic 4 monitor... Also, the SADX and SH thumbnails aren't displaying. Anybody care to take a look at what the problem is? Espyo 19:17, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Extra monitor types to watch out for

It should be said that some games have far more different kinds of monitors/item boxes than they seem. For example, the Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush games have additional items that only appear in the multiplayer modes, such as Confusion and Attract. The Advance games don't cover these in the English manuals, but the Rush games doMedia:SonicRush DS US manual.pdf[1]Media:SonicRushAdventure DS US manual.pdf[2], as well as Sonic Advance 3's Japanese manualMedia:SonicAdvance3 WiiUVC manual.pdf[3]. Might want to look into those. --BSonirachi (talk) 08:49, 11 May 2019 (EDT)

Here are the Japanese names for Sonic Rush Adventure's items and obstacles, from Sonic Rush Adventure Saikyou Kouryaku Guide: https://imgur.com/a/MUKv19I --Pecky (talk) 14:02, 15 May 2019 (EDT)
Is that your copy of the guide? If it is, maybe you can get the full guide scanned and put up here for future reference? Maybe even get enemy names from it. --BSonirachi (talk) 19:34, 15 May 2019 (EDT)
I don't currently have a scanner, unfortunately. There was a thread about the enemy names in the forum a few months ago.--Pecky (talk) 15:21, 16 May 2019 (EDT)

Monitor -> Item Box

Given that it's usually our policy to go with the most common name for a page title, I think it's time should have "Item Box" be the main title for the page. The name "monitor" was only used to describe the items in western manuals for the earlier games due to how the items were contained within, well, monitors. Most games that have items in containers since Sonic Adventure don't even contain them in monitors and as such the "monitor" term fell out of use internationaally, and newer games that DO use monitors as containers like Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania still address them as "Item Boxes" in their manuals. Lastly, in Japan they have always been called "Item Boxes".

I have done a change similar to this with Glide as the name "Power Glide" was only ever used in Sonic Triple Trouble, but for how many pages link to this one I thought I'd make a talk page comment about it before I go ahead and make the change. --BSonirachi (talk) 14:58, 9 September 2021 (EDT)

I support this move. "Item Box" is more common and all-encompassing, while "Monitor" only applies to pre-Sonic Adventure games and retro-style titles like Sonic 4. - --Blue Spikeball (talk) 19:47, 4 October 2021 (EDT)
Alright, if no one is opposed, I'm moving it in a week. Blue Spikeball (talk) 02:20, 2 August 2023 (EDT)
After discussion in Discord about it we're good to go with moving the page, and thus the deed has been done. --BSonirachi (talk) 15:26, 3 August 2023 (EDT)

Necessary Corrections

Sonic Unleashed PS2/Wii version does possess Item Boxes, which I may help to add to this page in a near future. Those boxes contain a variety of items:

  • Secret Item (may be a Secret Illustration, a Secret Soundtrack, a Secret Movie or a Secret Document)
  • Red Orbs (grant Dark Gaia Force)
  • Blue Orbs (fill the Unleash Gauge)
  • 1-ups
  • Secret Missions (unlock new stages)
