- Back to: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (prototype; 1993-11-03)/Comparisons.
Act 1
Sonic and Tails drop in with their standing sprites, not their "hurt" animations.
Act 1 has a completely different background. Though it was changed in the final, the different background would still persist in the Data Select icon:
If you die, the middle section of the background breaks.
Sonic and Tails do not have a dedicated underwater palette.
...but Super Sonic does! It's a strange shade of pink - "rosé" you might say.
Lose your Super and Sonic will change to an odd shade of blue.
...which turns purple when underwater.
Buggernauts are smaller in this prototype. The big one is the final's small one, while the small one is even smaller.
Big Shaker has a broken palette when underwater.
The transition to Act 2 doesn't work, meaning Sonic and Tails get stuck. Though even with edit mode you will find the level hasn't loaded.

Act 2
The initial section has different brick graphics. The player is given less time to react to the moving wall too.
Rings are rendered on top of tubes, rather than inside.
A horizontal pole that is grabbed onto when Sonic is being pushed upwards by fans. Jump while being pushed upwards and it will break, similarly to the vertical ones also found in this Zone.
Knuckles is already standing by the switch before the boss, and is momentarily blue.
He then runs over the switch and through a wall, jumping into and out of the water below at great speeds.
There are no horizontal fans just before the boss.
Eggman's Screw Mobile doesn't move downwards to create a vortex, instead playing how Knuckles fights the boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. It does, however, create problems by overwriting the water graphics.
Go too far to the right you go before the boss appears, and it will become even more corrupt. The final game is technically worse, because if you go too fast, you can skip the boss entirely, open the capsule and soft-lock the game (something fixed in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles).
The transition to Marble Garden Zone doesn't activate.
