Ian Jr. is a background character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Originally created as a fan character by Ian Mutchler, he has become notorious for being snuck into numerous pieces of Sonic media.
History
Ian Jr. was originally created in the game Sonic Forces, as the avatar of Ian Mutchler (for whom he is named)[1]. He was featured in a Kotaku article not long after[2], but otherwise seemed fated to fade into obscurity.
However, Ian Jr. rose to prominence four years later when he was featured in the Sonic Forces footage used in the Sonic 30th Anniversary Symphony[3]. According to Mutchler, this came about as an accident, as he'd used the save file he'd created Ian Jr. on to record the footage. However, upon finding Ian Jr., he requested that SEGA let him use the character in his footage, to which they accepted.[4].
A mere 5 months later, Ian Jr. was again featured as a cameo in the IDW Sonic issue Imposter Syndrome #1, being knocked back in the streets by Surge the Tenrec while she was causing damage to the city's electrical systems. According to Ian Mutchler, this was a surprised to him.[5]. However, he claimed Ian Jr. was "off to get a hoagie" in the scene.[6].
Ian Jr. had a cameo in the first episode of TailsTube.
In the game The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, Ian Jr. has multiple cameo appearances. The first is as a portrait in the background of the Library, and the second is as a part of an image in the Lounge. Here, he can be seen by printing off a picture of Sonic singing a song, in which he plays guitar behind Sonic.
