Sonic the Fighters (called Sonic Championship in North America untils the Gems release), is a fighting game.

An employee at AM2 in Sega added Sonic the Hedgehog characters into a copy of the game Fighting Vipers during his spare time. His coworkers liked the idea, so the game was developed and released in the arcade in May 1996, running on the Sega Model 2B board.

The following characters are playable:

If a character defeats all eight opponents, he will face Metal Sonic and Doctor Eggman (His North American name, Doctor Robotnik, was misspelled as 'Doctor Robotnic' in that distribution.)

A Sega Saturn version was announced but never released. The game was never released outside arcades until the release of Sonic Gems Collection.
