Mario & Sonic - London 2012 Virtual Card Album was a free downloadable app associated with Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games that was released in Europe by Nintendo and Sega under license from the International Olympic Committee to correspond with the 2012 London Olympics. When first announced at the June 2012 Nintendo Direct, it was called Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Virtual Card Album.[2]

The objective was to collect virtual cards within the application itself. Cards were available to collect until September 9th, 2012[3]. The app was delisted from the Nintendo eShop afterwards.

    Gameplay

Virtual cards could be collected by spending Play Coins, going to Nintendo Zone hotspots, by having StreetPass active on the Nintendo 3DS system, or by trading directly with other players via the infrared LED on the system. Some cards were given out at specific locations with there being 73 cards to collect in total. Additionally, cards have a "Rarity" valued from 1 to 5 stars. It was possible to receive duplicates, thus it was recommended to trade the duplicates with others.
