Coconuts, called Aiai (アイアイ) in the Japanese manual, is a monkey-like badnik from the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 found in Emerald Hill Zone. Coconuts launch coconuts (hence where they get their name from) at Sonic when he gets nearby, so when you jump towards them, they'll fire at you! Try passing under them so when they launch a coconut, they have to pause before reloading and then you can take them out.
This badnik was used as the base for the character Coconuts in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
In Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Coconuts is a monkey-robot with a lightbulb on its head. He used to be one of Dr. Robotnik's more important and devious Sonic-hunting badniks, until Scratch and Grounder were created. This event lead to Coconuts being demoted to janitor of Robotnik's base. Hating this job entirely, Coconuts still makes an effort to capture Sonic to try and win Robotnik's favour, in hopes of being promoted again. Being the oldest and more experienced between himself, Scratch and Grounder, Coconuts is usually less prone to fall for most of Sonic's tricks his "brothers" would blindly step into. He is voiced by Ian James Corlett.
The enemy reappeared in Sonic Pocket Adventure's Neo South Island Zone.
