A leaked prototype of Sonic 2 found by Simon Wai. It contains numerous levels dropped in the final version, and several renames and level differences.
Levels
- Neo Green Hill Zone (playable) (renamed to Aquatic Ruin Zone)
- Chemical Plant Zone (playable)
- Hill Top Zone (playable)
- Green Hill Zone (playable) (renamed to Emerald Hill Zone)
- Wood Zone (cut)
- Metropolis Zone (incomplete)
- Hidden Palace Zone (cut)
- Oil Ocean Zone (incomplete)
- Dust Hill Zone (incomplete) (renamed to Mystic Cave Zone)
- Casino Night Zone (incomplete)
- Genocide City Zone (empty) (cut)
- Death Egg Zone (empty)
"Lost" Levels
Dust Hill Zone has always been an enigma. The name does not fit Mystic Cave at all, and a screen shot from a game magazine showed a desert like level. It is constant source of debate.
Genocide City is completely empty. It has been widely debated as to what it was to be.
Hidden Palace is probably the most-loved level in the Sonic 2 beta. It got cut very shortly before release, apparantly due to size issues.
