Sonic 2 Retro Remix |
---|
Version: Sonic the Hedgehog Hacking Contest / SAGExpo 2010 release (bugfix 1) |
Last release: 30 July 2010 |
System: Sega Mega Drive / Genesis |
Original game: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit) |
Credits: DNXDelta, Thorn |
Sonic 2 Retro Remix is a large-scale hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by DNXDelta and Thorn. The game is based around a mission system akin to that of Super Mario 64, with each Zone containing several Acts each featuring time attack, score attack, and scavenger hunting missions. Completing missions awards Chaos Emeralds, which in turn allow the player to progress through barricades in the overworld to other Zones. The hack has been praised for its mission system, layouts, art and new moves, but criticized for its difficulty.

Controls
While the button no longer functions as a jump button, because it has been given new functions, all other controls from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are available, as well as:
- Curl: Press while in midair and not spinning to curl into a Spin Attack.
- Jump Dash: Press or in midair while in a Spin Attack to dash forward.
- Wall Kick: In midair, press or in the direction of a wall while pressing or holding to stick to the wall for a second, then jump to kick off of it. You can chain wall kicks together provided that you do not stick to a wall too long and fall off. (Wall kicking previously appeared officially in Knuckles' Chaotix by Mighty the Armadillo, and in several Mario games including Super Mario 64 which inspired the mission system.)
- Mid-air Boost: After being catapulted by a spring, seesaw, or similar device, press plus a direction to greatly adjust Sonic's trajectory, in combination with a radial spinning attack.
- Exit Act: During a regular Act, pause the game and press to exit an act and return to that Zone's overworld.
