Sonic the Hedgehog's Buddy Tails is a three issue mini-series published by Archie Comics. Focusing on the character Miles "Tails" Prower, it was the second mini-series to spin off from the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic book by the same publisher, and the third mini-series in general. It notably features the first appearances of the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters, Crocbot, the Downunda Freedom Fighters, Athair and the continent of Downunda.
Premise
Following the events of the "Growing Pains!" story from Sonic the Hedgehog issues #28 and #29, Tails ventures out to the southern hemisphere of Mobius all by himself in order to stop Dr. Robotnik's satellite operation on the continent of Downunda, seeking to prove his capablilities to the Knothole Freedom Fighters.[3]
Each issue prominently features segments known as "Tails to Astonish", which are presented as comic books written by Tails to describe previous issues' events from his perspective. These serve as spoofs of many Marvel Comics titles, getting their name from Tales to Astonish.
Background
Sonic the Hedgehog's Buddy Tails was first teased in Sonic the Hedgehog issue #27 by editor Scott Fulop, where he revealed that the "Submersible Rehearsal" story featured in the then upcoming Sonic Triple Trouble special would eventually tie into the storyline of a Tails-centric limited series.[4] The series was formally announced by Fulop in issue #28, where he revealed it as a follow-up to the "Growing Pains!" storyline that began in said issue, while also teasing the names of various new characters who were to debut in the series.[5]
The series sold less than the later Sonic's Friendly Nemesis Knuckles mini-series.[6]
In 2013, the entire mini-series was reprinted in Sonic Select Book Eight alongside "Submersible Rehearsal", "Growing Pains!" and "The Chosen One", a two-part storyline originally printed in Sonic the Hedgehog issues #149 and #150.
