Number of Acts: 7 |
The Special Stage in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II takes after the half-pipe stages from Sonic 2 and the Saturn version of Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island.
Just like in Episode I, the player must finish any regular Act with at least 50 Rings, then jump into the Giant Ring after the Signpost. Once a Special Stage has been cleared, the same Act cannot be played to enter another Special Stage; the player will need to play a different Act.
Gameplay
Sonic and Tails have to work together to get enough Rings to pass the goals and reach the Chaos Emerald as they run down the half-pipe. If they don't have enough Rings by the time they reach a checkpoint, they will fail the stage. The controls are largely the same as other half-pipe Special Stages in that the player can move with and and can make the characters jump, though the player also has the ability to boost by pressing / (360) / / (PS3), which will increase speed and draw in Rings.
Along with Dash Panels that automatically propel the player(s) at high speed, Springs have been added which transport Sonic and Tails to new half-pipe tracks entirely, allowing them to gather more Rings. Some sections feature a special item known as a Combination Dash, which will tether Sonic and Tails to each other with a rainbow-coloured glowing rope that can collect Rings for both characters for a short amount of time. Bombs are also joined by electric diamonds which freeze the player(s), but won't remove Rings.
The Special Stage can be restarted through the pause menu as many times as the player needs.
