Oil Ocean Zone
The layout for this zone is much unlike compared to the final version. The most unique elements in this prototype level are wooden balls that were released from the ground if a switch is pressed. The ball doesn't hurt Sonic. In fact, Sonic can have a ride by standing on it. The velocity of the ball is fixed and Sonic cannot stop or push the ball.
A bigger version of the ball is also available in Sonic 1's Green Hill Zone. It's visible in debug mode, but you cannot place the object and see what it does.

Ball appears in Sonic 1 debug mode. | Ball is active in Sonic 1 prototype. |
Oil Ocean Zone plays music #81 in the prototype, or equivalently #08 in the final.
Act 1
Push the button, and the ball comes out and rolls to the right. | The bouncing platform is missing the flames and spikes. |
Missing oil splashing animation. For some strange reasons, Sonic can sometimes walk on thin air. In addition, the pipe in the background is sucking oil up. |
Oil slides don't do anything to Sonic. |
One detail that applies to both acts is that the sun behaves differently.
The prototype sun has no animation, and scrolls along (and thus, wraps around) with the background. The sun is always above that short grey building in the prototype. |
In the final, the sun is animated, and its horizontal position is fixed on the screen. |
Act 2
More oil slides. | Again, wooden balls are everywhere |
