Flicky

Flickies are the stars of the classic Sega arcade game Flicky, and the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
They are most commonly birds - indeed, their original appearance was as a family of deep Sega-blue birds. However, in the Sonic the Hedgehog series other animals such as bears, mice, rabbits and so on, are referred to as 'Flickies' in the game manuals.
Role in the Sonic series
In the Sonic the Hedgehog series, they were described as being the animal inhabitants of Mobius, imprisoned by Dr. Robotnik for use as 'living batteries' for his badnik army. Sonic's goal is to free them from their badnik shells, and free imprisoned Flickies from the Egg Prison capsule that is found at the end of almost every boss fight.
Flickies were also the central focus of Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island. In this game, the freed Flickies of previous games inhabit their own island - however, they (surprise, surprise) are roboticised by Dr. Robotnik, and require Sonic's help.
