When pausing the game in the International versions, the message GAME PAUSED appears. This message was removed in the Japanese version, instead just pausing what is currently displayed on the HUD.[1]
The abrasive "hee-haw" jingle played when losing a life in the International versions was slowed down in the European version, and replaced with an entirely new jingle in the Japanese version.

The original jumping sound effect was replaced with a similar, sharper sound in the Japanese version.

The music played during the game's introduction cutscene was extended for the European version (including segments of the Game Over theme), but is cut off before it can be played in full.

The music used for the options screen had its tempo increased for the European release.

The music for Lava Powerhouse plays faster in the European version, and also fixes a glitch in which the PSG would die off upon the song's first loop.[1]
Like the music for Lava Powerhouse, the boss theme was also bugfixed to prevent certain instruments from playing before the song's loop point.
