Game appearances

Sonic Adventure 2

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its re-releases, the Drill Claw is performed by pressing the Action button while in the middle of a jump or a glide. Knuckles will immediately drop downward fist-first in a spiralling dive like a drill, taking out any enemies, Item Boxes or containers in his path and leaving afterimages in his wake. The move can also be cancelled, allowing Knuckles to fall normally or continue gliding. If Knuckles has acquired the Shovel Claw, then he will be able to dig upon reaching the ground with this move, provided he lands on a diggable surface such as dirt. Like with Knuckles' other offensive moves, the Drill Claw can be upgraded to break steel containers with the Hammer Gloves. Overall, the Drill Claw is a very versatile move that is useful for reaching lower ground quickly or to quickly dig in places.

Tikal can also perform the move in the 2P Battle mode. Rouge's version of the move is the Drill Drive.

Sonic Advance 2

The Drill ClawMedia:SonicAdvance2 GBA US manual.pdf[4] appears in Sonic Advance 2 as one of Knuckles' moves, executed by pressing Down+B in mid-air. In this game, Knuckles' drop is gradual rather than instantaneous and no longer has afterimages by itself, and his fist is now cloaked in flame. He can also perform this move as his Stop 'n' Slam Trick Action by pressing Down+R after being launched by a gimmick. Boost Mode will also be preserved when using the Trick Action variant of the move.

Sonic Advance 3

In Sonic Advance 3, Knuckles is able to perform the Drill ClawMedia:SonicAdvance3 GBA US manual.pdf[5] by pressing Down+B in mid-air and functions the exact same way as in Sonic Advance 2, however he can only use the move when he has Amy as his partner.
