The Black ShieldMedia:SA2B GC US manual.pdf[1] (ブラックシールド[2]) is one of the signature moves of Metal Sonic throughout the Sonic the Hedgehog series and alternate media.

Overview

When performing this move, Metal Sonic crosses his arms and bends his legs, then encases himself in a black octahedral energy barrier that rotates at high speed while his body glows in a variety of colours. While it is active, this shield is capable of protecting Metal Sonic from most forms of damage including special attacks, however it cannot protect him from time-stopping attacks like Time Stop and Chaos Control. Metal Sonic cannot change directions while using the move, but will preserve any momentum he had prior to activating the move. If he activates the Black Shield before touching a Dash Panel, he will even exceed his maximum speed.

Game appearances

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and by extension the 2012 re-release, is the only game in the series where Metal Sonic performs the move, and is used only in the 2P Battle mode. The move can be used at any time by repeatedly pressing B, and to stop the move the player must stop pressing B. Unlike the special attacks used by other characters, Metal Sonic does not need any Rings to use the move.
