- Back to: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Simon Wai prototype)/Comparisons.
Mystic Cave Zone exists in this prototype as "Dust Hill Zone".
This appears to be a demonstration Zone created by Sega to test how certain elements would work. We see some strange, and downright insane, arrangement of objects that makes the gameplay extremely difficult. There are no Rings or enemies in this Zone, and debug mode is necessary to get pass numerous pits that would be otherwise impassable.
Act 1
Straight from the outset the player can see three swinging platforms aligned together. The final game never uses more than two, and none appear in the first Act.
Four rotating spikes. The player never sees more than two surrounding a platform in the final game. There are so many objects in this introductory section that the game struggles to display them all.
Six rotating boxes. In the final they never come in pairs.
Getting past them leads to a pit.
The spiked steps function as intended, but the gap isn't covered.
A fuzzy thing lies on the ground before a gate.
When stepped on, it acts as switch. The rest of the Act is devoid of objects.

Act 2
Act 2 has no objects in it at all.
However this does mean the infamous spike pit doesn't have any spikes in it. There's no chance of getting stuck here with Super Sonic.
This Act has an entire top-most route that would be removed in later builds and the final.
