History
The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise had been represented in official Lego media long before the Lego Sonic the Hedgehog range. Sonic was featured in Lego Dimensions as a playable character in 2016, along with a Green Hill Zone-themed Lego Ideas set in 2022. The range would be revealed via a YouTube video on April 16, 2023. Leading up to the range's release, an ad campaign featuring Dr. Eggman taking over the Lego company was produced. The campaign began in the 2023 Sonic Central with the hashtag "#MakeLegoSonicMoreEggman", and ended on August 1.
Shortly after the sets' release, a browser game titled Speed Sphere Challenge was made available via the Lego website, where the player must control Sonic in the Speed Sphere to navigate through a level while destroying Badniks and collecting rings to defeat Dr. Eggman at the end.[10]
In November, the Lego minifigure variants of Sonic and Dr. Eggman would be included in Sonic Superstars as free downloadable content. Matching variants of Amy, Knuckles and Tails would be included in paid DLC, predating Knuckles' introduction to the toy line in Wave 2.
