Spin Coasters are typically found only in Sunset Park Zone, where they are piloted by unnamed ladybug-like Badniks throughout the Zone. Once Sonic or Tails takes out the Badnik riding a Spin Coaster with a Spin Attack, the vehicle will lie there without a rider, and the player can then jump in and ride it throughout the Zone.
To operate a Spin Coaster, the player must face the direction they want to go with or , then continuously perform a Spin Dash to propel the Spin Coaster in the given direction. By Spin Dashing in the opposite direction, the player can slow down the Spin Coaster to a stop and even make it start travelling the other way. The player can jump out of the Spin Coaster with or , but they cannot make the Spin Coaster jump by itself; only by launching off of ramps with it. At high speeds, the Spin Coaster is capable of smashing through Badniks, breakable walls, and even spikes, but it will be destroyed if the player lingers on exploding floors with it. Act 2 starts the player in a Spin Coaster that launches off a ramp and crashes into a solid wall, destroying it.
Spin Coasters also appear in the game's Time Attack mode, where they can be found in the lower paths of the level for the player to ride in.
