The Plains theme is a new theme seen in more recent games that features sparse trees and green rolling hills. This theme first appeared in Rainy Savanna in Sonic Drift 2.

These levels have vast open fields, usually situated in the middle of other environments. They are usually very open, allowing for greater freedom of movement than other areas. They can be levels to traverse over large areas, or act as centralizing HUB environments connecting other areas together. Sonic Frontiers has emphasized this new format with several levels, and with this being a potentially future blueprint for Sonic and Co's upcoming adventures, more levels are bound to have open environments moving forward.

Common elements found among such levels include very open areas, with sparse trees around, and may have hills or mountains surrounding it.
