Special Stage

A Special Stage is a stage whose primary function is to offer the player an opportunity to earn a Chaos Emerald (or, in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a Super Emerald) and, failing that, a bonus to their score. Special stages vary between games in both type and means of access.
