Story
It's Sonic. It doesn't need a story.
Oh, all right...
Five years ago, Dr. Robotnik assembled a massive robot army, and attacked the Sunset Isles of Mobius, a highly inhabited, beautiful place. The Isles had no army, and, while Sonic stood to defend them, he was defeated. The Isles forfeit, and Robotnik seized control of them. Ruling with an iron fist, he lay waste to cities that displeased him, and stripped islands raw. The citizens lived in fear, but they could not leave, lest they risk death if found.
Sonic the Hedgehog has finally emerged from parts unknown, where he disappeared after his defeat, determined to finally defeat Robotnik, and liberate the Isles from his oppressive reign.
...I told you it'd be better off without one.
Characters
Sonic the Hedgehog
A blue hedgehog who runs at the speed of sound. Sonic hates injustice and suffering, but is hasty and somewhat quick to anger.
Dr. Robotnik
An evil genius with an IQ of 300, Dr. Robotnik has conquered the islands, transforming them to fit his whims. He'll try to beat Sonic in a machine at the end of each Zone.

- 'S': This item transforms Sonic into Super Sonic even if he doesn't have all the Chaos Emeralds or 50 Rings.
- Super Ring: Provides 10 Rings.
- Robotnik: This harmful item damages Sonic.
- Extra Life: This item gives Sonic an extra life.
More items may be found within levels. If you see one you've never seen before, grab it!
Levels
- Dusk Drive Zone: Wander through a beautiful city at sunset, moving deeper into Robotnik's territory!
- Rust Realm Zone: Explore a ruined fortress from before Robotnik's conquest, but be careful... Some of the traps still work, and it's dark!
- Septic Slide Zone: After being flushed into the sewers, make your way to the surface- but hurry! Robotnik's sewer system isn't well-maintained, and if you fall into the sewage, who knows what you'll find?
- Toxic Trail Zone: The sewers drain into the sea near this once-enchanting tropical island. The toxic waste has killed the local wildlife, and the soil has eroded... Be careful where you step!
- Paradise Palace Zone: Hidden away for centuries, this legendary city beneath the waves is on the verge of collapse. It could fall apart any second...
- Icy Inferno Zone: Emerge in a spectacular land of fire and ice, using the steam they create to make your way to the sky!
- Grand Gardens Zone: Explore Robotnik's flying fortress, making your way to its pinnacle for the final battle!
- ??? Zone: The final Zone is a mystery- you'll have to wait until the release to see what it is!
Development
Nuggets of information on removed or changed content.
Scrapped Levels
Several originally intended levels are no longer in any form in the final game.
- Titanium Tunnel Zone: An abandoned mine using Mystic Cave graphics was situated after the desert Zone. Removed because it wasn't anything interesting.
- Desert Zone: Not removed, but heavily altered. This desert canyon Zone's layout is reused for Toxic Trail.
- Rocky Coast Zone: A one-Act tutorial Zone. Work was never even started before removal.
Espio the Chameleon
At one point, Espio was intended to be playable. His code was nearly finished, including a chargeable super-jump and the ability to breath and move unhindered in water. He was removed due to being overpowered.
Level Changes
Originally, Dusk Drive has a bleach-white palette. In addition, Rust Realm (at that point, Robotnik Ruin) had many underwater areas.
