Super Smash Bros. Brawl (called "Great Battle Smash Brothers X" in Japan) is the third in a series of Fighting game series featuring Nintendo characters. Unlike the previous two games, this game includes two third party characters, Solid Snake and Sonic, as well as a full blown Story Mode written by the same person who wrote the scenarios for Final Fantasy VII, Kazushige Nojima.
Inclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog
On October 10, 2007, it was announced on the Super Smash Bros. Brawl official website (Smash Bros. DOJO!!) that Sonic the Hedgehog would be a playable character in the game. Even though he was announced on the Dojo before the game was released in any countries, a player must first unlock Sonic to play as him. There are three methods of doing so:
- Complete Classic Mode with 10 characters.
- Play 300 VS. Mode matches. (Occasionally, he randomly appears before the 300 matches)
- In Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emmissary, complete the Great Maze stage.
In addition, after unlocking Sonic, a player will automatically unlock the Shadow the Hedgehog assist trophy and the Green Hill Zone stage to play on. Unlockable Sonic the Hedgehog-related trophies include:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Super Sonic
- Tails "Miles" Prower
- Dr. Eggman
- Knuckles the Echidna
- Amy Rose
- Blaze the Cat
- Chao
- Cream the Rabbit
- Jet the Hawk
- Silver the Hedgehog
Sonic is notable for being the fastest character ever included in the series - he can run on the road of the Big Blue stage for a while when equipped with the Bunny Hood item. If a player collects a smash ball as Sonic, he will turn into Super Sonic for a short while.
