Sonic Jam 6, also known as Super 1998 Sonic 6[1], is an unlicensed Mega Drive Sonic the Hedgehog game developed by Gamtec. A hack of the company's previous Super Mario Bros. clone Super Mario 2 1998 (and using graphics appropriated from Super Mario All-Stars), it was released exclusively in Taiwan in 1998.
This game is not to be confused with the legitimate 1997 Sega Saturn game, Sonic Jam.
Contents
Gameplay
Like the game it steals its title screen from, Sonic Jam 6 is a bootleg port of the Super Mario All-Stars version of the original Super Mario Bros. game. The Mario sprite of Super 1998 Mario 2 was replaced by Sonic the Hedgehog, who is red without a Super Mushroom and blue with one. The title screen was also changed to feature Sonic, as well as the "intermission" screens that display the remaining lives and the "Game Over" screen. Mario's name above the score readout was also changed to Sonic's. Curiously, the large Mario head in the underground bonus areas still remains. Controls are also modified; only the button allows Sonic to jump and shoots fireballs (if Sonic has grabbed a Fire Flower.)
History
Despite being an unlicensed game, Sonic Jam 6 was officially rated by Iran's ESRA on September 26, 2011, receiving a child-friendly 3+ rating.[2]
