Green Hill Zone
In the Nick Arcade prototype of Sonic 2, we have clear evidence that it was built off of Sonic 1. That evidence is in the form of this zone! The leftovers of Green Hill Zone are more than complete in this build, they actually went to the trouble of converting the 256x256 tiles down to 128x128.
Act 1
Welcome to Green Hill Zone! However this isn't as cool as it looks, as you can probably tell from the garbled lives icon and HUD. Just try walking!
The collision data in this level is significantly damaged, enough to make walking very difficult indeed. However, you can jump and run to get around it to an extent.
Comparing the prototype version with the Sonic 1 version...
we can see the item boxes have had mappings changes.
Act 2
Act 2 seems a lot more solid than Act 1
As with Act 1, the Piranhas appear to be the most intact Sonic 1 badnik.
The Sonic 1 push-against-rock and jump bug still exists!
Robotnik monitor! However, it does nothing.
Unused sprites in Sonic 1 seem to have manifested themselves onto the mapping of the Crab.
As we can see here, the Tails 1up box has replaced the standard Sonic 1up box mapping in Sonic 1.
And we complete the zone.
Act 3
Thanks to mapping changes, instead of an invincibility box in the tree, we get speed shoes.
Now onto the fun part, the boss!
Fighting against "garbleotnik" with Tails is a very weird experience.
Like in Emerald Hill Zone in this beta, when the boss dies he explodes. Maybe because Green Hill was taken out in the later beta, this exploding effect was deleted.
Even a garbled egg capsule is included!
Free the flickies! I'm sure they're glad to escape this broken zone...
