One possible explanation for this is that those pieces of music used both MIDI and Wave output, and some sound cards of the time were not capable of doing so.  Another explanation for the replacement is that the songs were replaced due to legal reasons, because some connections could be made between similar songs by [[Michael Jackson]], according to [http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6431491563467034834 this]. Other things that are noticed is that the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Level Select Cheat(left, left, left, right, right, right,up,up,up then holding ALT & R to reset to title screen works on Sonic 3 too in Angel Island Zone & also on S3&K is when you do that code in Mushroom Hill, instead of Debug it'll let any character play any zone in Level Select eg: Tails in Doomsday Zone. The best is when you do the level select code in Sonic 3, select Sound Test on the Title Screen, select SPECIAL STAGE 1 to open Blue Sphere, change the character to Knuckles, reset the game by holding ALT & R, select Sound Test in Title Screen & select a working level to play as Knuckles! Note that most levels can't be completed.

This same code, input at Mushroom Hill in S&K, does not enable debug mode like in the original, though it does still allow characters to play stages they couldn't access otherwise from the level select. Examples of this include Tails in Doomsday Zone and Knuckles in Sky Sanctuary 1. When the level select code is performed in Sonic 3, and the second special stage option is selected (which unlike in the original accesses the blue sphere mini-game) enables the player to use Knuckles in the Sonic 3 levels, though they are incomplete and thus cannot always be beaten.

Sonic & Knuckles Collection is a compilation game for Microsoft Windows-based PCs released in 1997. The ports have seemed to be slightly more buggy than their originals, and most of the original music is emulated in MIDI format.

Some of the music in the game(s), which include Carnival Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Launch Base Zone, the Knuckles Theme of Sonic 3 and the Sonic 3 credits music, were all replaced with original music. One possible explanation for this is that those pieces of music used sound effects not supported by the MIDI standard, and some sound cards of the time were not capable of playing the MIDI patches as well as sampled sound effects in the music. Another explanation for the replacement is that the songs were replaced due to legal reasons, because some connections could be made between similar songs by Michael Jackson, according to this. Other than that, the gameplay is identical to their Genesis counterparts.

Other things that are noticed is that the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Level Select Cheat(left, left, left, right, right, right,up,up,up then holding ALT & R to reset to title screen works on Sonic 3 too in Angel Island Zone.

This game is virtually impossible to play in windowed mode on any system with a CPU faster than 350MHz without any patches, because the game does not have proper speed-limiting routines in this mode. However, the timings used by full screen mode are based on the moniter's refresh rate, so the game can be played at the correct speed at a 60Hz refresh rate on any modern system.
