Choppers (called "Batabata" in the Japanese manual) are the gnashing piranha fish that leap up from under bridges to attack in Green Hill Zone. They can be easily destroyed by jumping on them as they come up; one should always be wary of them when one crosses a bridge.
There are similar looking enemies in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog located in Crystal Egg Zone. However, these enemies are unamed. These enemies actually swim horizontally through the air, usually in groups of three.
Chopper made a repeat appearance in the bonus Green Hill stage in Sonic Adventure 2. It is very similar to Sonic 2's Masher.
