In the 1207 prototype Special Stages were empty levels that looped forever and had no rules. Here in the 1227 prototype, there are some objects and you require rings to keep going. No sound effects play during these segments. If the last special stage (6) is selected in the stage select, the game will load the first (0).
You get 50 rings when entering the Special Stage, regardless of how many you might have had during the preceeding level.

Get 00 Blue Spheres!, a similar message to Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Objects only exist in the first half of the first stage (0). The game doesn't ask for any blue spheres, but provides some anyway, meaning as long as you stay on the path, passing the first section is guaranteed.

There are, however, no objects or rings in the second half. To get to the end of the stage, you have to make sure you've collected as many rings as possible in the first half.

While there is a giant ring, there is no special message when it is collected. Instead, the stage just ends.

The second stage demand blue spheres but doesn't provide any, so after your initial count of 50 rings ends, you lose. Other stages have no blue sphere requirements, but you still can't beat them.
