Super A'can with controller

The Super A'can is a console released in China in 1995 by Funtech Entertainment. It is a console that seems to share similarities with other 16-bit consoles of the day. The casing and controller had strong similarities to the Super Nintendo. It had a Motorola 6800 processer like the Neo Geo and Genesis. The games for the system also bore strong resemblances to games available at the time. It could display a large number of colors, similar to the SNES.

Despite combining the most popular assets of popular gaming consoles and having the support of Taiwan's largest software developers it failed in the market place for a few reasons. The price for the system itself was pretty high, especially for a region that thrives off pirated software and hardware. The console was also released at a time when more powerful systems with 3D technology were starting to appear on the market. The developers for the system were also rushed to complete their games on a poorly documented development kit. This hurt the quality and potential of some games.

The failure of the system wound up costing Funtech Entertainment over 6 million in US dollars. The company destroyed the development and production materials and sold off remaining consoles (without controllers and AC adaptors in most cases) to the United States as scrap parts. This makes a complete system hard to come by in the market place.
