Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed was announced on April 30, 2012. It is the sequel to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and is being directed by Gareth Wilson, the former lead designer of Blur, a similar racing game that also uses power-ups as a prominent feature.

Gameplay
The game's sur-name comes from its new transforming vehicle system, which allows players to traverse land, sea, and sky by transforming their vehicles mid-race, allowing for much more varied tracks. The courses will also change, with different features during each lap.
Characters
The game has characters from several of Sega's previous franchises making their debut in the All-Stars Racing series, including Gilius Thunderhead and Vyse who both were cut from the previous title's roster. Along with new Sega franchise characters, characters from Non-Sega franchises will join the game as well. Select characters will be system-specific, and others will be DLC. Two announced characters include Ralph from the upcoming Walt Disney movie Wreck-it Ralph and real professional Nascar racer Danica Patrick.
The characters announced thus far are:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Tails
- Knuckles
- Amy Rose
- Shadow the Hedgehog
- Dr. Eggman
- Metal Sonic (DLC)
- Amigo
- Aiai
- BD Joe
- Beat
- Gilius Thunderhead
- Vyse
- Joe Musashi
- Reala
- Nights
- Ralph
- Danica Patrick
- Mii (Nintendo)
Courses
The race courses in this game are all based off of different Sega franchises, and unlike the first game only one to two tracks from every franchise will be used, allowing for more tracks from other franchises. The courses shown thus far are:
- Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes
- Starlight Carnival from Sonic Colours
- Samba Studios from Samba de Amigo
- Carrier Zone from After Burner
- Adder's Lair from Golden Axe
- Dragon Canyon from Skies of Arcadia
- Rouges' Landing from Skies of Arcadia
- Graffiti City from Jet Set Radio
- Spring Valley from Nights
- OutRun Track (DLC)
Bonus Edition
A Bonus Edition of the game is planned, and will contain DLC content for the game. The package comes with a course and character like the previous game, an OutRun-themed course and Metal Sonic as a playable racer.
