Coastal Valley is a hack of Emerald Hill Zone created by Saxman. It works with both Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Knuckles in Sonic 2. It was the second full-scale level hack for a Sonic game to be completed, with the final version being released on November 11, 2000. However, it was the first such effort to be started, with initial incomplete versions being released before the Hidden Palace level hack done by SSNTails. The entire level layout was created using a hexadecimal editor.
