The second zone in Sonic 2, Chemical Plant Zone is Dr. Robotnik's chemical plant, full of tubes and floating platforms. He uses a new substance called "Mega-mack" to try to kill Sonic.

Instruction Manual Description
Flash through a high-tech maze bult with pipes and ducts. Robotnik's flooded the factory with a pool of toxic liquid called "Mega Mack" that poisons Sonic in a few moments!
Villains
Enemies
- Grabber - Spider enemy, hangs from the ceiling and grabs Sonic. Then unless Tails can destroy the Grabber, it explodes and hurts/kills Sonic.
- Spiny - Anemone enemy, moves very slowly and spits out missiles.
Boss
- Boss: Dr. Robotnik's Chemical Machine
- Hits: 8
The tricky part about this boss is that the floor panels on each side of you flip over, kind of like trap doors. That being said, be careful as to not be on any one of those platforms while they turn over, or else you'll plummet to your death. The trick here is to simply bounce on Robotnik TWICE in a row while he's docked on the side of the screen, filling up his giant vat with blue chemicals. When that's full, he'll try to dump it on you. Not to worry, just jump over the chemicals, it's not hard at all to do so.
Note: In the beta, sprites have been found of Robotnik accidentally dumping the chemicals in his machine on himself. This may be a missing boss ending sequence similar to the one in Emerald Hill Zone.
Differences between beta and final
- The loop-de-loop platforms have octogonal edges instead of being flat.
- The platforms which move across rails (most noticably in Act 2) are much smaller.
