Sonic 3 Beta Hoax is a ROM hack created by Saxman, inspired by Cyan Helkaraxe's Sonic 1 Beta Hoax. The ROM was finalized at 11:25 PM EST on December 31, 2000, and it was made available on the Sonic Stuff Research Group front page at 11:59 PM. The unusual step of converting the ROM from raw binary format to SMD was taken in order to improve its perceived authenticity.
