The name Mecha Sonic is sometimes used interchangeably with Metal Sonic, though such a mix-up involves (at the least) two different personae of the character, most would say there are two separate characters involved.
The robot Sonic in Sonic & Knuckles is usually referred to as Mecha Sonic.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie) comic issue #39, Sonic is dubbed "Mecha Sonic" when he's captured by Nack and roboticized by Dr. Robotnik.
