The game features the ability to play as three different characters—[[Sonic]], [[Mighty]], and [[Shadow]]—and features extensive reworking of the original game with new art, music, abilities and layouts, among other things. |

Characters and Moves
All three characters have special art (HUD, lampposts, item boxes, etc.) exclusive to that character, as well as their own end-of-act music. As Sonic, pressing A enables Light Speed Dash. As Shadow, pressing B or C twice allows for a Homing Attack, and pressing A with 6 or more rings allows a small speed boost, at the cost of 4 rings. Mighty is set to have a wall jump feature similar to that in Knuckles' Chaotix, though this has not been implemented yet (NOTE: Feature has been scrapped). All three characters have spindash.
Super Sonic is set to be in the game, though no footage of a Super Shadow or Super Mighty has been seen.
Music
Various tracks and sound effects have been imported from Sonic CD, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles' Chaotix and other Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games, in addition to remixes of Sonic 1's original tunes.
Levels
Two modes exist within the game: normal, which features new levels, and original, which has the original levels from Sonic 1 intact. Normal levels include:
- Sunset Hill Zone
- Dark Fortress Zone
- City Outskirts Zone
- Misty Maze Zone
- Starry Night Zone
- Metallic Base Zone
