Template:SA2Level Meteor Herd is Knuckles' smaller equivelant of Rouge's Mad Space in Sonic Adventure 2. It takes place on the outside of the Ark, but inside some kind of protective barrier.
It appears to be modelled after many classic Sci-Fi, especially those set on Mars. The Master Emerald actually drops here from the Shuttle which is why Knuckles ends up looking for it here.
