[[Image:Sonic06.jpg|thumb|right|Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) promotional picture.]]'''''Sonic the Hedgehog''''' (also called '''''Sonic Next-Gen''''' or '''''Sonic 360''''' to differentiate it from similarly-titled games) is the name of the next-generation [[video game]] featuring [[Sonic the Hedgehog]] to be released on [[PlayStation 3]] and [[Xbox 360]] sometime in 2006. It will not be ported to the [[Nintendo Wii|wii]]. It is being developed at [[Sonic Team]], directed by [[Yuji Naka]] with rumored input from both the original designer of the Sonic character, [[Naoto Ohshima]], and the original music composer, [[Masato Nakamura]].

'''''Sonic the Hedgehog''''' is a video game for the [[Xbox 360]] and [[PlayStation 3]] that was made to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' franchise. It was developed by the [[Sonic Team]] and directed by [[Shun Nakamura]].

It was revealed during a press release on September 9, 2005; Yuji Naka hinted that this game will be a recreation or a retelling of the original [[Sega Genesis]] game ''[[Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)|Sonic the Hedgehog]]'', using speeds "only capable on next gen systems", though his comments could equally refer to the design-process and not the storyline itself returning to its roots. Its release will mark the 15th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, just as ''[[Sonic Adventure 2]]'' marked the 10th. This would tentatively pin the game's release date at June 23rd, 2006.
+
The game shares its name with two earlier video games, a manga, a television series, a comic book series and, of course, Sonic the Hedgehog himself. To disambiguate, the game has been called by a number of different aliases, including Sonic 2006, Sonic '06, Sonic 360 (even though it was not exclusive to the Xbox 360) and Sonic Next-Gen. Xbox Live and the PlayStation 3 XMB refer to it in all-caps as SONIC THE HEDGEHOG.

Among the new innovations revealed are the incorporation of passing time, including the realistic movement of the Sun, as well as highly detailed characters and landscapes (in one demo, a tree was shown in game with mushrooms growing on it).
+
This is the second Sonic the Hedgehog game to get an E10+ rating by the ESRB, the first being Shadow the Hedgehog. Other content rating organizations agreed with similar ratings. The PEGI rating is 12+, while the CERO rating is A.

==Gameplay==
* The detail level and draw distance have been upped considerably. In the demo, Sonic was seen running around fields, forests and canyons that seemed to go on for miles in every direction. High-res textures are everywhere.

Although each character plays the same levels, each character's unique abilities allow him or her to get to different areas of each stage, and deny them from accessing certain items.

* A Day/Night cycle has been implemented. As you play, time slowly changes from dawn, to noon, dusk, night time, and back to dawn again in real-time. Everything in the game casts shadows based on the position of the sun.

Gameplay is broken up into two gameplay styles, similar to ''Sonic Adventure''. '''Action Stages''' are where the bulk of the gameplay takes place, whereas '''Town Stages''' are free-roaming locations where the player can talk to [[non-player character]]s and explore, as in ''[[Sonic Adventure]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Sonic Adventure#Adventure Fields|Adventure Fields]]. For each of the action stages in the respective stories, gold medals are obtainable by achieving high ranks in these stages.

* The basic features of previous Sonic games return; Rail Grinding, Springs, Dash Plates and the Homing Attack were all shown in the Demo. It is unknown how much this move set will be changed for the future.
+
There are a total of eleven stages. A ranking system exists for each of the levels and town missions, providing ranks calculated from score, rings and time remaining. The highest rank is S Rank, followed by A Rank, down to the lowest, D.

* The Robots designed for this game have been made to look more menacing - they appear to be smoother, more deadly variations of the [[G.U.N.]] robots from ''[[Sonic Adventure 2]]''.

Several downloadable extensions have been released that add features to single-player gameplay. These include Very Hard mode, a more difficult version of the game; Boss Attack modes, which allow a playable character to engage in continuous battles with all of the game's bosses; and Team Attack Amigo mode, which allows players to play through the entirety of the game as amigo characters.[http://sonic.sega.jp/sonic/downloadcontents]

* Yuji Naka has stated that this game will capture the most realistic sensation of speed ever, a feature only possible on Next-Generation Systems. This could be seen as a parallel to how ''[[NiGHTS]]'' was designed: capturing sensation of flight.
+
The PS3 version doesn't have the upgrade chips that are in the 360 version.

* The Havok Physics Engine has been implemented, giving robots and debris realistic physics as objects crumble, fall and bounce around the playing field.

''Sonic the Hedgehog'' features two styles of multiplayer game play that offer two player action.

==Rumored Features==

The first mode, '''Tag Mode''', is a co-op type of play between Sonic, Silver and Shadow.  Two players, each one controlling a character, must work together to clear levels and collect Chaos Emeralds. In this mode, lives are shared. The second game style available is '''Battle Mode'''.  Battle mode pits two players against each other and has them race to a goal in the selected level.
* The Day/Night Cycle, Incredible Draw Distance, and the promise on the sensation of speed all seem to suggest that this game will be shifting away from the straight-forward level designs seen in ''[[Sonic Adventure 2]]'' and ''[[Sonic Heroes]]'' in favor of a more cohesive world; somewhat like the Adventure Fields in the original ''[[Sonic Adventure]]'', but on a much larger scale with a greater depth of gameplay.

* The game will star Sonic, and Sonic only. Yuji Naka has stated in interviews that it would be interesting to do a game that stars just Sonic, but that fans also complain when their favorite character doesn't make an appearance - leaving him currently undecided on the issue.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that was made to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It was developed by the Sonic Team and directed by Shun Nakamura.

Gameplay

Single player

Although each character plays the same levels, each character's unique abilities allow him or her to get to different areas of each stage, and deny them from accessing certain items.

Gameplay is broken up into two gameplay styles, similar to Sonic Adventure. Action Stages are where the bulk of the gameplay takes place, whereas Town Stages are free-roaming locations where the player can talk to non-player characters and explore, as in Sonic Adventure's Adventure Fields. For each of the action stages in the respective stories, gold medals are obtainable by achieving high ranks in these stages.

There are a total of eleven stages. A ranking system exists for each of the levels and town missions, providing ranks calculated from score, rings and time remaining. The highest rank is S Rank, followed by A Rank, down to the lowest, D.

Several downloadable extensions have been released that add features to single-player gameplay. These include Very Hard mode, a more difficult version of the game; Boss Attack modes, which allow a playable character to engage in continuous battles with all of the game's bosses; and Team Attack Amigo mode, which allows players to play through the entirety of the game as amigo characters.[1]

The PS3 version doesn't have the upgrade chips that are in the 360 version.

Multiplayer

Sonic the Hedgehog features two styles of multiplayer game play that offer two player action.

The first mode, Tag Mode, is a co-op type of play between Sonic, Silver and Shadow. Two players, each one controlling a character, must work together to clear levels and collect Chaos Emeralds. In this mode, lives are shared. The second game style available is Battle Mode. Battle mode pits two players against each other and has them race to a goal in the selected level.

The previously rumored mini-games that were to allow up to four players to play simultaneously/alternately (Quiz, Race and a few others) seem to be missing in the final release of the game. [2]
