The second level in Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island, Rusty Ruin Zone, fulfills the ancient ruins cliché for the game. The level takes place in a hidden temple,  and featured "spinners", which literally turned Sonic into a spinning top, giving him the ability to break through solid objects. The boss in this level featured Robotnik in a golem wedged into the wall, requiring you to jump on his hands and jump into the glass guarding the vulnerable Robotnik.

This level is the first to have harmful obstacles.  It features spiked balls, very similar to the spikes found in the 2D games.  There's pillars that have to be destroyed by using the spinners.  It's also the only one to use floating platforms, similar to the ones in the 2D games.  Some of these move back and forth, some of them are static until Sonic jumps on them.  Flame throwers are present within the walls.  If Sonic moves fast enough he can avoid them easily.  Fire Shields are present within the level.  It gives no special moves like the gold shield, or the fire shield from Sonic 3,however it is similar because Sonic can get hit by the flame throwers and not receive damage.

Other obstacles include:

Steep hills that require trampolines to climb.  The trampolines come out of certain points in the slope.

Rotating spiked balls.  These spiked balls are connected by chain to a center rotating point.  These either have one spiked ball, or two, and can come in different shapes.

Breakable Walls: Unlike the pillars that require Sonic to be spun by the spinners to be destroyed, these walls must be spindashed through to break.  They can lead to different areas in the act.  Sometimes they're the only way to get to a point earlier in the act, sometimes they lead to hidden places with power ups Knuckles and Tails.

Other obstacles include: Steep hills that require trampolines to climb. The trampolines come out of certain points in the slope. Rotating spiked balls. These spiked balls are connected by chain to a center rotating point. These either have one spiked ball, or two, and can come in different shapes.
