Death Egg Zone is functional in beta 4, but is riddled with bugs and is missing key sound effects. No boss music is ever triggered, meaning the Death Egg theme music (whose appearance is fleeting in the final game) plays throughout.

While Mecha Sonic has yet to receive all its sound effects, it behaves more-or-less as expected. However it enters the level slower than in the final game, and the explosion graphics are glitched, the animal graphics overwrite the explosion graphics. This also highlights one of the oddities in Sonic 2 which persists to the final game - the graphics for the animal friends are loaded into memory, but there are no means of freeing any from anything.

Eggman gets into his Giant Mech slightly earlier, which means there's more room to fight the boss from the opposing side (though quite why you'd want to is a different story).

Additionally, Giant Mech only needs 8 hits to be defeated in this build. In the final game, he takes 12 hits to defeat.

Once more animals explode around it, the remains of the Giant Mech just stay there. Sonic doesn't automatically start running to the right.

As expected, the "explosions" begin as you run to the right. But nothing is stopping you from going back to the left and triggering the Giant Mech again. Or at least the parts that can render with so many sprites on screen.

Exit on the right hand side and there is no ending sequence. You're just returned to the Sega logo.
