Sonic Retro

From Sonic Retro

Hmm, shouldn't the merge with S2Beta be mentioned in this article?

Timeline updates - Missing Sites

Sonic Hacking Community (SHaC))

- Started by Saxman on Jan 1, 2001. (Need to confirm.) Was hosted by SSRG (EmulationZone). Began as a sister site to SSRG. Had domain name of http://www.sonichacking.org/ (I think domain name was obtained later that year.) Site was affectionately called “The SHaC”.

- In mid to late 2002 after Saxman and Andy were unable to figure out how SHaC would fit in with the portfolio of sites under EmulationZone, Saxman moved the site to Sonic Cult. A new domain name of http://www.shacnet.com/ was obtained for the move. (Also because the former domain name expired.)

- Site went offline late 2003 or so. I think Ultima tried to revive it but failed. According to WayBack Machine, website was later auto-redirected people to Sonic Cult.

- … then some number of years later, the domain name http://www.sonichacking.org/ was acquired by the folks at Sonic Hacking Contest.

Sonic Hacking Contest (SHC)

- Started by SSRG staffer Nayr on a message board forum. (I think S2Beta.) We didn’t have an official website for it on SSRG / Emulation Zone because of the legality of sharing ROM hacks. (Technically speaking, sharing a modified ROM images is more illegal that just sharing the ROM image itself, if that makes any sense.)

- Site floated on message board forums for a while. Early history of site is complex. Some folks have written documents about it, but there are some errors. Nayr is trying to piece it all together.

- Eventually moved to shc.zone (When that happened is outside my knowledge.)

- Again, the domain name http://www.sonichacking.org/ was acquired by the folks at Sonic Hacking Contest at some point.

Organized Chaos

Stealth’s personal website), which later became Headcannon.com

- Started originally at http://www.emulationzone.org/projects/stealth (When? I am not sure. Likely 1998. Might have had a different URL before that as well.)

- Eventually moved to stealth.emulationzone.org (I’d have to research deeper when I got him that sub-domain name. My current best guess is Aug 11-2000.)

- Site moved off Emulation Zone on 6/29/2009 for http://stealth.hapisan.com (I think server issues over at ZTNET lead to him searching for a new host. And we had issues around that time.)

- Site eventually renamed to “Headcannon” … and the rest is history.

SAGE

- Another big site missing from the timeline.

- Founded by Emulation Zone staffer Ryan Bloom in 2000. I don’t recall where it was originally hosted. I think off of the SFGHQ website or forums?

- Rlan has a ton of info on the early days of SAGE if needed.

‘ZRN (Zone Radio Network)

Not sure if you want to add these or not. Here is some quick info on the SEGA and Nintendo themed stations. I can dig up more info on these and maybe others if there is interest.

Radio Nintendo:

- Started in 2003 by Andy Wolan and an unknown person (I’d have to dig deeper into my logs)

- Management handed to Phil 'GreenYoshi' Whitehall in 2006 of EmulationZone.

- ‘ZRN shutdown in 2009 due to traffic / costs at ZTNET. Radio Nintendo also went down.

- Radio Nintendo rebooted in 2010 on its own domain name RadioNintendo.com

- For more info after that date, you can view this doc: http://radionintendo.com/history

Sega Games Radio (SGR):

- After ZRN shutdown, station was moved to http://sgr.soniccagedome.com

- Run by Mike Taylor. I’d have to dig up additional info

TSSZ:

- TSSZ had a station on there. From when to when? I can ask Tristan if interested

SSR – Sega Sonic Radio:

- Ran by SonicBlur

- Shutdown after ZRN shutdown

WTMK:

- Have to look up when they joined.

- Moved to its own server after we had an extended outage. (2009 I guess)

Timeline updates - Perhaps Not Relevant but notable

EmuLinks.com

- Link database / search engine we started in 2000. I forget when we shut it done but we gave up after Google made it obsolete. Was hosted off EmulationZone

- Not sure if this is relevant for the timeline

Timeline - Corrections

Secrets of Sonic Team Spring 2007 Site enters archive mode, redirecting readers to S2Beta & Sonic Cult

SoST never auto-redirected people to the S2Beta, Sonic Cult or some other page. (That was SHaC from what I gather from WayBackMachine).
