Toxic Pools is the first level in Sonic Spinball (8-bit). After being shot down by Dr. Robotnik in the opening sequence, Sonic arrives in a toxic dump, complete with mine carts and pools of hazardous sewage. Other than the completely different layout this differs from the 16-bit version as the rock features remain purple in hue, rather than yellow. The sludge itself is a much darker color and is less noticible.
