Special Stage

The Special Stage, in Sonic 1, is a rotating special stage in which the goal is to find and touch a Chaos Emerald. It is accessed by jumping into a giant ring, which appears at the end of Act 1 and 2 of each zone when it is completed with fifty rings or more. Note that it cannot be entered through any act of Scrap Brain Zone.

There are various blocks in the Special Stage that each has its own effect. They include:

  • Bumpers (red), which Sonic bounces off;
  • Plain blocks (red and white), off which Sonic can jump;
  • Speed-changing blocks (red and white stripes with the word "UP" or "DOWN" printed on them), which change the speed at which the stage rotates;
  • Reverse blocks (black with the letter R), which reverse the direction of the stage's rotation;
  • "Goal" blocks (flashing red and blue), the name of which is misleading, as they end the Special Stage in failure.

Of particular note are the diamond-shaped blocks that surround the Chaos Emerald and cannot be found elsewhere. They require multiple hits to destroy.

Regardless of whether Sonic acquires the Chaos Emerald, he will receive 100 points for each ring, and a Continue if he gathered 50 or more rings. He can also earn and extra life by collecting 100 rings, like in normal stages.
