Dark Gaia is the final boss in Sonic Unleashed.
Dark Gaia was awakened, along with Light Gaia (a.k.a. Chip), when Doctor Eggman split the world apart with the help of the Chaos Emeralds. When he was awoken, a part of him went inside Sonic which turned him into a Werehog.
Every few million years, Dark Gaia awakens with Light Gaia. He destroys the world and then Light Gaia restores it.
Dr. Eggman wanted to use Dark Gaia to help build his Eggman Empire. But, as usual, his plan backfired and Dark Gaia attacked him.
When it looked he was defeated by Sonic, he became Perfect Dark Gaia. That's when Sonic transforms into Super Sonic. Once defeated by Super Sonic, Dark Gaia falls into the center of the earth.
