A Sprite map, in 16-bit Sonic games, is essentially a list of Genesis VDP sprites and their locations relative to the object itself; i.e. a map of sprites. One sprite map defines one frame of animation. A seperate structure, usually referred to as the animation script, links several sprite maps together to form a smooth animation.
