The only references ever made to Dust Hill Zone could be found in some magazines and the dumped prototype ROM. It seems to be the early name for [[Mystic Cave Zone]] in Sonic 2, according to these.

It's often mistaken for the unreleased [[desert level]] that can be seen in some early concept art. This is because of the rumors some unknown Sonic fan started spreading in the late 90's, but since there was never any proof behind that statement and [[Brenda Ross]] admitted she had never used the name Dust Hill for her desert, it's now obvious that there's no connections at all between both levels.

Dust Hill Zone [aka: Desert Level/Zone] can be refered to as two things:

  • Mystic Cave Prototype
  • Desert Concept Art

The "general view" of Dust Hill would describe a desert area hot and sandy. This would apply to the concept arts as seen above. Although, in technicality, there is no piece of animation discovered as of yet to show that Dust Hill was a playable level.

The name Dust Hill Zone was meant for this desert level as confirmed by Brenda Ross in a second interview, conducted by Wetflame. However, the level pointer from the known beta released by Simon Wai until the final was set for Mystic Cave Zone.

(NOTE: The first interview conducted by Deviance on February 2001 to Brenda Ross is deemed unreliable, so confirmation by Brenda on whether the desert level was called "Dust Hill" is sketchy, mainly from the bombardment of e-mails asking about the level and it's name "Dust Hill").

The concept of this zone is a desert with cactus and sand. The level was also suppose to have a way to travel underground and on top of the ground. No boss was planned for this zone.

In the pictures above, the left and middle ones use inaccurate colours while the one on the right is using the correct colours. The middle one was printed on the back of a Sears, Roebuck and Co. Magazine from a November/December issue of 1992. None of these pictures were accompanied with a caption mentioning "Dust Hill Zone".

FACT: Brenda Ross herself has never called this zone "Dust Hill" as mentioned in the interview conducted by Wetflame on September 2004. She has called it "the desert level" or "the desert zone". It is not fact that the title "Dust Hill" would not have gone to this desert level before the known prototype because of the following...

FACT: There is no photographic evidence [film, official video game pictures [playable versions], or otherwise], to show that Mystic Cave's prototype name was Dust Hill Zone BEFORE the known beta, as of yet. The only photographic evidence WITH captions of the name "Dust Hill Zone" belonging to "Mystic Cave Zone" comes AFTER the known prototype, which does not state it being used before the prototype.

Other details for this zone are unknown, so other pieces of information is missing from this article.
